LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell junior LB Ben Richard (Coatesville, Pa./Herriman (Utah)) and freshman RB Chad Freshnock (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) helped the Bison earn two of the Patriot League’s four weekly awards following the first weekend of the regular season. Richard earned his second career Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honor, while Freshnock was cited as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week after strong performances in the Bison’s season-opening 26-10 victory at Marist on Saturday.
In addition to the Patriot League award, Richard was named the Bison Athlete of the Week and he was an Honorable Mention STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Week.
Richard totaled 13 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks and one pass breakup in helping the Bucknell defense force six Marist turnovers. The Preseason All-Patriot League selection led the team in tackles and tackles for loss, and tied with lineman Ben Schumacher for the team lead in sacks.
A Second Team All-Patriot League selection a year ago, Richard now has 93 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks in his three-year career.
Freshnock had a strong collegiate debut, rushing 12 times for 51 yards in a reserve role. He combined with Joey DeFloria, who rushed for a career-high 145 yards, to help Bucknell hold a 176-78 edge in rushing yards.
Thanks to Saturday’s win, Bucknell has now won its season opener six consecutive years for the first time since 1952-57. The Bison will be back in action this Saturday, Sept. 10, at Duquesne. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
