LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sean O'Brien spearheaded an incredible comeback by Bucknell men’s lacrosse in a season-opening 14-13 win at Delaware on Saturday. After scoring three fourth-quarter goals to help the Bison erase a five-goal deficit, O’Brien was voted the Corvias Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. He was also tabbed as the Fifth Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week.
O’Brien scored a career-high six goals in the win, including the first two of the fourth quarter to tie the game (12-12) for the first time since 1:10 remained in the first quarter. The midfielder added his final goal to put the Bison up 14-12 with 2:48 to play, which turned out to be a crucial score as the Blue Hens responded with a goal just over one minute later.
The Bison trailed 11-6 early in the second half before storming back to get the non-conference victory. It was their fourth win over the Blue Hens in the past five years.
O’Brien added an assist and two ground balls in the win. Junior Will Sands assisted on all four of Bucknell’s fourth-quarter goals.
Bucknell will now play its next three games at home, starting with next Saturday’s 1 p.m. contest against non-league foe Bryant. The game will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
