LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Brittany Willwerth has been nothing short of sensational at the start of her collegiate career for the Bucknell field hockey team, scoring four goals in the first four games. On Monday, she was named the 5th Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week for her outstanding performance while leading the Bison to a 3-2 upset win in overtime over 12th-ranked Albany.
Willwerth scored two goals in the win over Albany, including the game-winner 2:27 into overtime. She also scored the first goal of the game, which came just 4:39 into the first half. Both scores were unassisted.
Willwerth was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week in each of the first two weeks of the season. She hopes to win a third straight, and possibly a Player of the Week nod, when the conference releases its weekly awards on Tuesday.
The numbers Willwerth has recorded aren’t just gaudy, they are also efficient. Her four goals have come on just nine shots.
The Bison have another game against a nationally-ranked opponent when they travel to play No. 5 Penn State on Tuesday night. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex.
