LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell sophomore pitcher Andrew Andreychik (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) was named the Patriot League Pitcher of the Week and Bison Athlete of the Week Monday following an outstanding four-hit shutout performance against Penn State Sunday afternoon at Depew Field. It is Andreychik’s second career Patriot League Pitcher of the Week award and his first Bison Athlete of the Week honor.
The 2013 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, Andreychik helped Bucknell to its first win over Penn State since 1998 as the Bison claimed the seven-inning game one of Sunday’s doubleheader by a 1-0 score. The right-hander struck out five, did not walk anyone and retired the final 11 hitters he faced to even his season record at 2-2.
Andreychik now has three career shutouts. Last April against Army he pitched Bucknell’s first shutout by a freshman since at least 1979. His also pitched five scoreless innings against Long Island earlier this month in a game that ended in a 0-0 tie after rain halted play.
The first baseball player to earn Bison Athlete of the Week honors since Doug Shribman in 2010, Andreychik leads all Bucknell starters with a 3.12 ERA this season. He has struck out 20 and walked just four in 26.0 innings. Andreychik has allowed just one run over his last three starts (17.0 IP) and owns a consecutive scoreless innings streak of 12.2.
Andreychik and his Bison teammates were scheduled to travel to Vestal, N.Y., Tuesday for a doubleheader against Binghamton. Due to field conditions and winter-like weather in the forecast, that doubleheader has been rescheduled for April 8. Bucknell was originally slated to play at Saint Joseph’s April 8. That contest has been postponed. No makeup date has been announced.
The Bison will return to action this weekend, March 29-30, when they host Navy in a four-game Patriot League series at Depew Field. Doubleheaders both days will begin at noon. Sunday’s doubleheader will be broadcast live on WVBU 90.5 FM and BucknellBison.com.
