FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Karen Campbell tallied 17 kills and had a hitting percentage above .500 for the second time this season to lead Bucknell to a 3-1 win over Hartford in non-conference volleyball action Saturday. The senior was named the Tournament MVP, helping the Bison improved to 4-1 after posting a 2-0 record at Sacred Heart’s Hampton Inn Shelton Invitational.
The 4-1 start is Bucknell’s best since the 2005-06 season and is already more than half of their final win total from last season. The Bison struggled in just one set, but cruised through the other three, topping Hartford 25-16, 14-25, 25-16, 25-16. The Hawks fell to 0-7.
Campbell’s 17 kills came on 29 total attacks with just two errors to give her a hitting percentage of .517. She posted a percentage of .650 in a win over NJIT earlier this year and has a .379 mark and 62 kills for the season. She added two solo blocks and three block assists in the win. She leads the team with 20 total blocks.
Campbell finished with 31 kills, a .387 hitting percentage and 11 total blocks (four solo) over two matches at the event. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by sophomore Hana Sawanobori and freshman Blake Buchholz. Sawanobori tallied 33 digs and three aces, including 14 digs and two aces in Saturday’s win. Buchholz recorded 13 kills and eight digs against Hartford, giving her 23 kills and 30 digs for the tournament. Meghan Wentzel paced the Bison with 45 assists against the Hawks.
Paulina Modestow registered 16 kills and 10 digs for Hartford. Erinn Lavelle led the team with 14 digs, while Astrid Mangual contributed 27 assists.
Bucknell will be on the road for another tournament when it travels to Poughkeepsie, New York for the Volley in the Valley on Sept. 11-12. The Bison will play La Salle on Friday and Bryant and Marist on Saturday.
