POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Bucknell volleyball team made quick work of La Salle on Friday night in the first of its three matches at the Volley in the Valley, hosted by Marist. The Bison improved to 5-1 with the sweep of the Explorers, winning by scores of 25-20, 25-15, 25-19. The Explorers fell to 4-5.
The 5-1 record is Bucknell’s best through six matches since 1998. That team also started 5-1 and went on to finish 16-12 on its way to winning the Patriot League Tournament and appearing in the NCAA Tournament. The Bison’s current four-match winning is the longest since 2010.
Karen Campbell continued to excel in her final season with the Bison. She led the team with 12 kills, posting yet another sparkling hitting percentage of .429. She also paced the team with five total blocks. Campbell has racked up awards this season, including MVP honors at the SHU Hampton Inn Shelton Invitational, Patriot League Player of the Week and All-Tournament Team recognition at the CCSU Blue Devil Classic. Her performance in the first match has her on track to receive more honors at the Volley in the Valley.
Campbell led the way, but Bucknell continued to be unpredictable as far as stats go. Sophomore Hailey Stout had nine kills and five digs, while freshman Blake Buchholz tallied seven kills and four digs. Senior Meghan Wentzel recorded 32 assists, sophomore Hana Sawanobori led the team with 12 digs, and sophomore Jenna Slusar did her part with three aces. Slusar has a team-leading 11 aces through six matches.
“It was a great team effort. We are continuing to learn to play as a team and lean on each other. It’s always great when everyone can contribute. It makes us stronger AS ONE,” said third-year Bucknell head coach Anna Allison, echoing the team’s #BUVBASONE motto.
Bucknell concludes play at the Volley in the Valley with two matches on Saturday. The Bison will play Bryant at 11 a.m. and will have a long break before playing Marist at 7 p.m. The Red Foxes won a close 3-2 match with the Bulldogs on Friday.
