MORGANTON, N.C. -- Junior D.J. Magee is tied for fourth place after 36 holes after posting career-best rounds of 71 and 68 on Monday, and the Bucknell men's golf team is tied for seventh at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate at the par-70 Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club. Freshman Jubal Early also shot 68 in the second round, as the Bison compiled team scores of 295 and a season-best 286.
Scores were low all over Mimosa Hills on the opening day of the tournament. There were 20 rounds in the 60s and only nine in the 80s, and Magee is right in the mix as he sits just three strokes off the individual lead with 18 holes yet to come on Tuesday.
Magee's 1-under 139 puts him in a six-way tie for fourth place. Jacksonville's Franck Medale is 4-under (65-71), followed by Alex Burris of Appalachian State at 3-under (68-69) and Vincent Blanchette of Gardner-Webb at 2-under (70-68). Tyler Stone of Wingate had the round of the day with an opening-round 64, but he shot 75 in the afternoon and is part of that tie for fourth.
Bucknell's five starters combined for 21 birdies on the day, including six each from Magee and Early. Magee had two birdies, three bogeys and 13 pars in his first-round 71, and then he came back in the afternoon and birdied three of his first five holes. He was 3-under headed to his final hole (No. 13) but made just his second bogey of the round to finish with a 68.
Early, who is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, opened with a 76 but then put up the best round of his young career with a 68 in the second round. Early made five birdies and three bogeys in that outstanding round, and he is tied for 23rd place.
Jacksonville is even-par as a team and has the individual lead by three shots over Appalachian State. The Dolphins compiled an 8-under 272 in the morning, followed by a 288 in the second round.
Bucknell is tied with Evansville for seventh place at 581, three shots behind Presbyterian for the No. 6 spot.
Bucknell's 286 is tied for the eighth-best team round in school history. The 68s posted by Early and Magee are tied for 14th all-time.
The third and final round gets underway at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com.
