EASTON, Pa. – Sophomore Meghan Kovac and senior Mariah Midyette each homered, junior Carolyn Wan drove in four runs, and the Bucknell softball team completed a three-game sweep of Lafayette with a 12-2 win in five innings on Sunday at the Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex. The Bison, who were picked to finish second in the Patriot League this season, are off to a great start with a 5-1 lead record while running their overall mark to 19-11.
Bucknell put the game away early, jumping out to a 10-1 lead after three innings. Kovac got things started with a solo homer to center field in the Bison’s three-run first inning. Midyette drove in the other two runs with a double down the right field line.
With the Bison leading 6-1, Midyette led off the top of the third inning with a solo shot to right field. That sparked a four-run inning, which included a two-run single by Wan and an RBI double by Kovac.
Bucknell now has eight home runs this season. Kovac’s blast was her fourth of the season, while Midyette smacked her first of the year.
The Bison finished with 15 hits, led by Wan, Kovac and Midyette with three apiece. Freshman Ryanne Rokos singled twice, while senior Amanda Fazio, freshman Anna Gimmestad, freshman Lauren Hadley and junior Christina Martinez each singled once.
Fazio started and went four innings to record her ninth win of the season. She gave up two runs on five hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out two. Senior Dana Nielsen pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Samantha Sweigart led the Lafayette offense with a solo home run in the first inning. The Leopards fell to 7-20 overall and 0-6 in the Patriot League.
Bucknell now turns its attention to a midweek non-conference doubleheader at Pittsburgh on Wednesday. The first game will start at 3 p.m. at Vartabedian Field.
