LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lehigh made the most of its opportunities while sweeping Bucknell in a Patriot League softball doubleheader on Saturday at Becker Field. The Mountain Hawks scored nine of their 12 runs on the day with two outs, rolling to a 10-0 win in six innings in the first game and a 2-1 victory in the second game.
Bucknell, which has clinched a spot in the Patriot League Tournament, currently sits in fourth place in the league standings with an overall record of 26-21 and a conference mark of 10-7. The Bison can finish as high as third. Lehigh remains in first at 33-12 overall and 11-2 in league play.
Senior Mariah Midyette had one hit in each game as she continued to raise her average in her final season. She is now batting .316 with at least one hit in 19 of her past 23 games.
The teams will conclude the three-game series at noon on Sunday. The Bison will then be off until the Patriot League Tournament on May 12-14.
Game 1 – Lehigh 10, Bucknell 0 (6 innings)
Lehigh scored its first seven runs with two outs on its way to a 10-0 win in the first game. Rachel Timberman highlighted the scoring for the Mountain Hawks with a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning, her first of the season.
Nielsen did a great job through the first three innings, holding Lehigh to no runs on just one hit. The Mountain Hawks didn’t break out until they scored four runs on four hits in the fourth inning and added three runs on three hits in the fifth.
Emily Sorem went all six innings in the circle for Lehigh, improving to 14-5 while allowing two hits. She walked one and struck out four.
Midyette and junior Chaylen Andolino each singled for the Bison. Andolino’s hit gave her seven in her past eight at-bats.
Game 2 – Lehigh 2, Bucknell 1
Baserunning issues, while not always avoidable, proved costly as Bucknell was edged 2-1 in the second game. The Bison lined into two double plays and had another runner thrown out attempting to go from first to third on a sacrifice bunt attempt.
Lehigh struck first with one run in the first inning thanks to an RBI double by Vicky Lattanzio. The Mountain Hawks went up 2-0 with an RBI single by Ashley Cole in the third inning.
Bucknell cut the deficit in half with one run in the sixth inning. Sophomore Meghan Kovac led off with a double down the left field line. Sophomore Celina Antonellis, who entered as a pinch-runner, moved to third on a groundout by freshman Lauren Hadley and scored on a single by Midyette.
Fazio pitched well, going all seven innings in a losing effort. She gave up two runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out four batters..
The Bison tallied seven hits off Christine Campbell, the Preseason Patriot League Pitcher of the Year. Hadley singled twice, while Fazio, junior Christina Martinez and freshman Ryanne Rokos had one single apiece.
In addition to the seven hits, Campbell also walked three batters. She struck out five while improving to 18-5 on the season.
