DAYTON, Ohio – After Friday’s game at Dayton was cancelled due to lightning, the Bucknell women’s soccer team was itching to get back on the field. The Bison returned to the pitch Sunday, defeating Wright State 2-0 at Alumni Field. Bucknell improves to 3-0 on the year, its best start since the 2003 season.
Bucknell added insurance in the second half, coming in the 63rd minute off the foot of Bailey Hurst. On a corner kick opportunity, Maddie Dano blasted the ball into a crowded box. After a few bounces, Karli Cirovski controlled the ball and sent a pass to the freshman for her first collegiate goal.
The Bison outshot Wright State12-10 in the match, while holding a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bison back line did a great job stifling a Raiders offense that tallied 24 goals in 2015. Wright State, which reached the Horizon League Tournament championship game a year ago, was held to just one shot on goal in Bucknell’s second-consecutive clean sheet.
It was career shutout No. 16 for goalkeeper Jessica Ratner, who became the program’s all-time leader, passing Kathryn Sutton ’09 (15).
“Coming into the weekend, we were really excited for both games,” said head coach Kelly Cook. “To have one cancelled due to the weather was disappointing, but I think it really fired us up for today. To travel this far for one game, we really wanted to take advantage of the opportunity.”
Bucknell returns to action Thursday (Sept. 1) to wrap up its road trip at ACC school Syracuse. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
