LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior Daniel Wright and sophomore Max McDonald opened the fall portion of the men’s tennis season with singles titles as play wrapped up at the Bucknell Fall Invite on Sunday. Additionally, Wright teamed up with junior Timber Erskine to give the Bison a first-place finish in doubles.
Wright went 3-0 to take first in Flight 1 singles, giving him a top-two finish in the top flight of this event in each of the past two seasons. He recorded a straight-sets victory over Loyola’s Tyler Blessing in the quarterfinals on Saturday, and then opened play Sunday with a tough 6-2, 5-7, (12-10) triumph over Saint Francis freshman Franz Luna, the top-ranked 18-year old in Guatemala prior to playing for the Red Flash. His finals win came over teammate Max Palmer with 6-3, 6-2 scores.
Palmer, a freshman, was making his collegiate debut for the Bison this weekend. He advanced to the championship match with wins over Louis Tonon (Mount St. Mary’s) and Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Saint Francis). Foo-Kune was a First Team All-NEC selection at No. 2 singles last season.
McDonald won his title in Flight 2, where he registered a perfect 4-0 record. He won in straight sets over Colgate’s Noah Rosenblat on Saturday, and then added a semifinal win over Jan vit Suntar (Saint Francis) and a championships victory over Darren Mast (Mount St. Mary’s) on Sunday. Both matches were challenging, as he won by 5-7, 6-4, (10-7) scores in the semifinal round and 7-5, 7-6 scores in the finals.
Wright and Erskine tallied four wins on their way to a first-place finish in Flight 1 doubles. They defeated teams from Saint Francis, Mount St. Mary’s, and Colgate before matching up against a pair of their teammates in the finals. They took the title with a 6-3 victory Palmer and junior Max Kane.
Bucknell will be back in action this coming weekend as it travels to play in the Saint Joseph’s Invitational. The event will be held on Sept. 16-18, at the SJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus.
