MERION STATION, Pa. – The Bucknell women’s tennis team opened the Saint Joseph’s Invitational with doubles play on Friday and advanced two teams to the semifinals. Senior Michele Urbinati and sophomore Lauren Fishbein won a pair of matches in Flight 1, while junior Emilie Bush and freshman Paige Leavy did the same in Flight 2, but both teams dropped their semifinal match.
Both Bucknell teams came as close as possible to qualifying for the championship match. Urbinati and Fishbein fell 9-7 to Villanova’s Kaylan Rotman and Lindsey Evans, while Bush and Leavy lost 9-8 (7-4) to Villanova’s Linley Busby and Paulina Bajet.
Urbinati and Fishbein opened with an 8-5 win over George Washington’s Allison Hansen and Taylor Nederlander. They followed that up with an easy 8-2 victory over Maureen Devlin and Isis Gill-Reid (Saint Joseph’s).
Bush and Leavy played close matches all day, including a 9-7 win over Villanova’s Conner Brewer and Ellie Zimmerman in their first round match. In the quarterfinals, they edged Drexel’s Fiorella Coria and Jennifer White 9-8 (4).
The Bison will have eight players competing when singles action begins on Saturday.
