ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell women’s tennis team ran into some tough competition as it opened play at the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational on Friday. The Bison had four players advance to the quarterfinal round before suffering losses.

Freshman Jill Auteri and sophomore Mishi Papich were the lone first round winners for Bucknell. Sophomore Lauren Fishbein and junior Emilie Bush advanced with byes.

Auteri defeated George Washington’s Allison Hansen 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of Flight D. She went on to lose to Rutgers’ Farris Cunningham 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinal  match. Auteri is 6-4 in her first season with the Bison.

Papich also won in straight sets in the first round, beating Howard’s Alexandria Boston 6-1, 6-2. Her quarterfinal loss came to Navy’s Sabrina Jiang by scores of 6-0, 6-2. Papich is 6-4 during the fall season.

Auteri and Papich also recorded the lone doubles win for Bucknell. Following a loss in the first round, the Bison duo topped Navy’s Danika Kahatapitiva and Audrey Channell 6-4. Auteri and Papich were teaming up for the first time.

Bucknell had the misfortune of matching up against Rutgers from the Big Ten Conference in numerous matches. Four of the Bison’s losses on the day came to the Scarlet Knights.

Play will resume on Saturday and concludes on Sunday.
