LEWISBURG, Pa. – Rade Joksimovic scored a Bucknell-record 14 goals to lead the Bison men’s water polo team to a 24-4 victory over Connecticut College in the first round of the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Championship Friday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium. The top-seeded Bison move on to the semifinals to face the winner of fourth-seeded Fordham and fifth-seeded Wagner, who play Friday evening.
Joksimovic, who was named conference Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year on Thursday, netted eight goals in the first quarter and had his 14th goal come with just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter. He broke Josh Watts’ school record of 13 that had stood since 1999. Joksimovic joined Hall-of-Famer Scott Schulte as the only players in program history with three double-figure goal outings in a career.
Joksimovic scored 10 of Bucknell’s first 11 goals as the Bison opened an 11-0 lead midway through the second quarter. The lead ballooned to as many as 22 goals before Connecticut College (11-16) netted the final two scores of the contest.
Joksimovic’s 14 goals came on just 16 shots. He moved up one spot to third on the program’s single-season goals list with 138.
Nine different Bison netted goals in the game with Cooper Dolan (2) and Logan Schofield (2) the only other multiple-goal scorers. Sean Daley had four assists to move into fourth place on the school’s career list with 179.
Bucknell’s 24 goals equaled a season high. The Bison had 22 goals after three periods.
Bucknell (21-4) has now won seven games in a row and has won its most games since going 21-21 in 2000.
Saturday’s semifinal game against Wagner or Fordham is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
