LEWISBURG, Pa. – Led by senior Claire DeBoer with 18 points, Bucknell had five players score in double-figures in a 79-56 win over visiting Colgate in Patriot League women’s basketball action Saturday at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison improved to 14-3 overall and 6-0 in the league with their ninth consecutive win, while the Raiders dropped to 5-12 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Bucknell never trailed for the second consecutive game. The Bison have won their past three contests, all against league opponents, by an average of 23.7 points.
“I’ve been really impressed with our team in how well we have played over the past couple of weeks and how much we have improved,” Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell said. “I’d like to think we aren’t at our peak yet, but we are playing our best basketball to this point of the season.”
Senior Sune Swart scored 13 points for Bucknell, sophomore Kaitlyn Slagus added 11, and senior Megan McGurk and sophomore Kate Walker chipped in with 10 apiece. It was the first time this season that the Bison had five players score in double-figures. They just missed having six, as sophomore Kyi English had eight points.
Bucknell didn’t waste any time pulling ahead as it took a double-digit lead, 21-11, after one quarter. Colgate made a run in the second quarter, cutting the lead to seven, 35-28, with 57 seconds left on the clock, but the Bison closed the half with a 5-0 run. DeBoer connected on a pair of free throws with 36 seconds remaining, and Walker drained a 3-pointer with 17 seconds to play.
Walker had two 3-pointers for the Bison, who shot 7-of-15 from beyond the arc. For the season, she is shooting 44 percent (24-54) on 3-point attempts. She is shooting 52 percent (22-43) over the past 12 games.
The Bison increased their lead and helped put the game away with an 8-2 run in the final 2:32 of the third quarter. English hit a 3-pointer, DeBoer drove for a layup, and Walker had a trey to put them up 65-43.
Bucknell, which entered the game 25th in the nation in rebounding margin at +8.3, out-rebounded Colgate 48-32. Slagus finished with eight boards, Swart tallied five, and freshman MK Moore pulled down a career-high four in just three minutes.
The Bison upped their program-record home winning streak to 20 games and their streak in Patriot League regular season games to 15. They are 23-1 in league contests over the past two seasons.
DeBoer ranks seventh on the program’s all-time scoring list with 1,412 points and is eighth with 770 rebounds. She is one of just three players in team history with at least 1,400 points and 700 boards.
The next two games for Bucknell are both on the road. The Bison will travel to Loyola for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, and will head to Boston University for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.
