WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- Sarah Galzerano set career highs with five goals and seven points, Maddy Molinari recorded a hat trick with eight draw controls, and Annie Gilbertson spearheaded a strong defensive effort with seven ground balls and three caused turnovers, leading the Bucknell women's lacrosse team to a 14-10 win over Monmouth on Wednesday night at Hesse Field.
The Bison improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 on the road this season, while high-scoring Monmouth fell to 1-3.
The Hawks came in averaging 14.5 goals per game this season, but the Bison held them to four in the first half and later built up a lead of as many as seven goals before Monmouth tallied the final three of the night.
After a scoreless opening eight minutes, Bucknell got going with a 4-0 run and led the rest of the way. Galzerano scored twice in 28-second span to make it 2-0, and then Eve Lukowski and Molinari followed.
Audrey Walsh scored off a Christina Manis assist to make it an 8-2 game. After the Hawks got two goals back later in the half, Galzerano completed her hat trick by finishing a Manis feed with just four seconds on the clock, and Bucknell took a 9-4 lead into the halftime break.
Monmouth never did piece together consecutive goals in the second half until the Bison already had a commanding 14-7 advantage. Goals by Galzerano and Manis gave Bucknell that seven-goal cushion with 7:27 to play.
The stat sheet was just about even, as both teams attempted 24 shots and won 13 draw controls. Bucknell led 19-18 in ground balls. Bison goalie Jamie DeWitt finished with seven saves, while Elizabeth Duswalt stopped one shot in just under seven minutes of relief action. Two Hawks goalies combined for five saves.
Olivia Higson led Monmouth with four goals. The Hawks had won five of the previous six series meetings, including a 17-16 shootout last year at Graham Field.
Next up for the Bison is a home game against Wagner on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
