SAN DIEGO, Calif. --  Max McDonald went 2-0 in singles as Bucknell men’s tennis split a pair of matches in San Diego on Monday. The Bison began the day with a 6-1 loss to UC Riverside, but bounced back with a 5-4 win over Point Loma in a match that used the Division II nine-point format for team scoring.

McDonald scored the first singles point of the match for Bucknell in the win over Point Loma, battling four a tough 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory on court three.

The bottom half of the Bison lineup came up huge as they won on courts three, four, five, and six. Ben Gerber (court four) and Max Haase (court six) rolled to straight-sets wins, while Ben Gerber also won in straight sets, albeit in a close 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) match, on court five.

Bucknell lost the first two completed doubles matches, but with each match counting as one team point, its win on court three proved pivotal. McDonald teamed with Colin Sacco for the 8-7 triumph.

Point Loma, which is ranked No. 22 in Division II, fell to 2-10.

“The Point Loma match we went with an entire team lineup,” Bucknell head coach Bruce Myers said. “We got huge wins at 4, 5, and 6 single to tie the match. McDonald went down 4-1 in the third set, his second third-set match of the day, but fought back through the fog to clinch the match. Huge heart on display by the entire team. Those were great wins by Sacco and Haase to turn the tide of the match. It was a great win considering we played without or No. 1 and 2 players in Daniel Wright and Andrei Vitiuc.”

McDonald was the lone singles winner for the Bison against UC Riverside, prevailing in three sets again, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.

The Highlanders improved to 7-8 with their third straight win.

“We started the day very flat against UC Riverside,” Myers said. “The 93-plus degree heat quickly took its toll on us. We were not prepared for those elements. We lost three of four three-set matches and struggled with our fitness.”

Bucknell (4-12) ends its trip to California with a match against Western New Mexico on Wednesday at noon.
