LEWISBURG, Pa. – Mackenzie Howe scored four goals and Kailey Conry dished out three assists to lead Boston University to a 13-8 victory over Bucknell in the Patriot League women’s lacrosse openers for both teams. Audrey Walsh logged two goals and an assist, and Maddy Molinari had two goals and seven draw controls to lead the Bison, who are now 5-3 overall.

The Terriers (3-4, 1-0 PL) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after just 8:20 of play, with Howe scoring two of those goals after entering the game with just one on the season. After a timeout, the Bison regrouped and scored four of the next five goals to draw within one at 5-4.

Walsh and Mary Margaret Kenney potted back-to-back free-position goals to make it a one-goal game. Boston University’s Mickenzie Larivee and Bucknell’s Morgan Steinhacker swapped goals to keep the margin at one, but the Terriers scored twice in the final 3:29 to take an 8-5 lead into the locker room.

The run stretched to six goals in a row as the Terriers outscored the Bison 4-0 over the first 11 minutes of the second half. Kaitlin Belval’s unassisted tally made it a 12-5 game.

The Bison answered with three consecutive goals from Sarah Galzerano, Molinari and Walsh, pulling them within 12-8 with 10:36 to play. Bucknell had a number of good chances to get even closer, but Terriers goalie Caroline Meegan made a handful of terrific saves down the stretch to keep the Bison off the board the rest of the way. Belval’s goal with 1.4 seconds remaining made it 13-8.

Bucknell once again had success in the draw circle, winning 16 of 22. Molinari led all players with seven, her fourth game with seven or more this season. Katherine Doyle had a strong game with four draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers, and Lucia Smircich led the team with three caused turnovers.

Senior goalie Elizabeth Duswalt made four saves while allowing only two goals in 23 minutes of relief action. Starter Jamie DeWitt stopped six shots, while Meegan finished with 12 for the Terriers.

Christina Manis, who broke the Bucknell career assists record last week at Temple, finished with one goal and one assist on the day.

The Bison continue conference play next Saturday at noon with their first-ever trip to West Point.
