LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team made its 2017 Depew Field debut Saturday, but was upended by Cornell in a doubleheader. The Big Red claimed the opener 5-2 and won the second game by an 11-4 decision.

Bucknell combined to post 15 hits in the two games. Danny Rafferty went 5-for-7 with one RBI, while Tyler Wincig recorded three hits and three RBIs.

The Bison are now 8-11 on the season while Cornell improved to 8-3. The two teams will finish up the weekend with a doubleheader on Sunday. Game one is set for 12 p.m.

Game 1 – Cornell 5, Bucknell 2
The Big Red plated the game’s first run in the second inning, but Bucknell quickly answered with a run from Luke Johnson in the bottom of the inning.

Cornell added one run in the fifth and one more in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. The Bison cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the sixth off a RBI-double from Rafferty.

The Big Red added insurance in the final inning, scoring two more runs.

Connor Van Hoose started on the mound, pitching 5.2 innings. He scattered eight hits while striking out five and was charged with three earned runs. Jack Schoenberger (0.2 IP) and Nate Grisius (0.2 IP) pitched the final 1.1 innings.

Game 2 – Cornell 11, Bucknell 4
Cornell scored one run in the second inning and two more in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

Bucknell plated three in the fourth to tie the game. Wincig hit a bases loaded single to left field to score Johnson and Sam Clark, followed by a single from Chuckie Scales to score Keifer Rawlings.

The Big Red pulled away with six runs in the fifth inning. Cornell added one more in the seventh and another run in the ninth.

Bucknell scored one more run in the seventh inning off a two-out single from Clark.

Jack Grabek (1-3) got the start, pitching 4.1 innings. Tommy Gambon was strong in his two innings of relief, allowing no hits while striking out four.
