UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball team dropped a midweek contest at Penn State by a 5-3 score Wednesday evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Luke Johnson finished with a pair of doubles and three RBIs in the loss.

Bucknell (13-18) produced nine hits in the game. Sam Clark reached base for the fifth straight contest, going 2-for-4 with one run scored, while Luke Hartman finished 2-for-3 with one extra base hit. Brett Smith recorded one hit, extending his streak to five games.

Neither team scored through the first 4.2 innings, until Johnson put Bucknell on the board with a two-run double down the left field line.

The Nittany Lions (12-20) quickly responded, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, highlighted by a bases clearing triple from Colin Hughes. Penn State added another run in the sixth inning.

Bucknell scored one more run in the seventh inning, thanks to a RBI double from Johnson, scoring Keifer Rawlings. In the last two games, Johnson has tallied seven RBIs.     

The Bison threatened in multiple innings, leaving 12 runners on base.

Jack Simpson got the start on the mound, pitching 3.1 innings. He surrendered just two hits while striking out two. The Bison used six relievers over the final 4.2 innings.   

Bucknell resumes Patriot League play this weekend (Apr. 15-16), hosting a four-game series against Lafayette at Depew Field. Doubleheaders both days begin at noon. Saturday and Sunday’s contests will have a live audio broadcast available via The broadcast will also air on WVBU 90.5 FM.
