WORCESTER, Mass. – Bucknell softball dropped its third straight one-run game to Holy Cross on Sunday, coming up just short in a 3-2 loss at Freshman Field.
Trailing 3-1 after five innings, Bucknell cut the deficit in half with a run in the sixth. With two outs and nobody on, sophomore Lauren Hadley lined an opposite-field triple to right center. Junior Meghan Kovac followed with a single up the middle to drive in the run and give the Bison a chance in the final inning.
Bucknell showed a no-quit attitude despite starting the seventh inning in the bottom third of their lineup. Senior Christina Martinez drew a one-out walk. Junior Maddie Minneci pinch-ran and made her way to third base on a single by Chaylen Andolino. The Bison looked to be aggressive on the basepaths, sending pinch-runner Celina Antonellis to second on a steal, but Holy Cross made a nice defensive play, cutting off the throw and getting the runner at third out on the play.
Katy Watson, who pitched the seventh inning to record the save for Holy Cross, got a groundout to first base to finish off the game.
The Bison finished with five hits, including an RBI single by Martinez that put her team ahead 1-0 in the second inning. Senior Carolyn Wan also had a single in the game.
Holy Cross tied the game in the second inning when a run scored on an infield single to third base by Kylee Malouf. The close call at first went the Crusaders' way, allowing Sydney Burr to score from third with two outs.
The Crusaders went ahead 2-1 with an unearned run in the third inning.
Bucknell's playoff hopes took a big hit, but it isn't out of contention yet. The Bison (23-18, 6-9 PL) are one game back of Holy Cross (12-25, 7-8 PL) for the final spot in the bracket with three games to play. They must finish two games better in their home series against Boston University than the Crusaders do in their home series against Lafayette.
Five of Bucknell's nine league losses have been decided by just one run.
The Bison will play two games against the Terriers at Becker Field on Saturday at noon. They will conclude the series and the regular season with one game on Sunday at noon.
