LEXINGTON, Ky. – Matthew Fay broke his own school record in the pole vault Friday on the second day of the NCAA East Preliminary Meet at Kentucky's UK Outdoor Track & Field Complex.
Reaching the NCAA East Preliminary Meet for the first time in his career, Fay finished 21st, clearing 16-10 3/4, breaking his own school record and qualifying mark of 16-9 1/4, 28th in the region, which he posted at the Bucknell Team Challenge and IC4A Championships, breaking a 17 year-old Bison record.
"Fay had a great day," said head coach Kevin Donner. "Setting the school record at this meet is a very hard thing to do and he took some nice attempts at the height that would have qualified him for Eugene. Being a sophomore, he will be in great position next year."
Fay concludes a very strong sophomore campaign. He earned All-Patriot League honors in the event, while receiving his first-ever All-East citation.
Sarah Chandler competed in the steeplechase, finishing 31st with a time of 10:37.90. The senior entered with the 39th-best time in the region of 10:24.71, which came in a runner-up finish at the ECAC Championships, smashing her own school record. She earned the silver medal in the race at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships.
"Chandler ran a very solid race and finished well ahead of her seed coming in, commented Donner. "We are so glad she decided to start steeplechasing again after two years of middle distance and to make NCAA just caps the career of one of our all time greatest runners.
Chandler, a 15-time All-Patriot League selection and four-year Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, will be remembered as one of the most accomplished runners in Bucknell history.
Colleen Buckley will run in the 5,000-meter race on Saturday. Start time is scheduled 8:05 p.m.
