LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell field hockey team began its 2017 campaign with a 6-2 loss to defending MAAC champion Monmouth Friday afternoon at Graham Field.

In front of 380 fans, Kelly Hanna's first career hat trick and MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Julie Laszlo's three assists propelled the Hawks (1-0) past the Bison (0-1).

Bucknell jumped out to 1-0 lead at the 10:33 mark when M.C. Evans redirected a penalty corner into the back of the net. But Monmouth netted four unanswered goals, including two in a 19-second span just before the 30-minute mark, to build what proved to be an insurmountable 4-1 advantage.

At the 58:43 mark, freshman Leah Fogelsanger scored her first career goal to draw the Bison back within two. After Katie Mannino sent a shot on net that was blocked, Fogelsanger tapped the rebound into the cage.

Less than five minutes later, Hanna completed her hat trick with a tip of a penalty corner to put the Hawks back up by three. Mallory Kusakavitch ultimately capped the scoring at the 67:43 mark.

Gabi Millan made five saves for Monmouth while Emily Finn turned aside three shots for Bucknell. Fogelsanger, Stephanie Dressler and Brittany Willwerth each took two shots for the Bison.

The Hawks held the advantage in shots (11-9) while the Bison drew more penalty corners (7-6).

Bucknell returns to action on Sunday, traveling to Temple University for a 1 p.m. contest. The game will be streamed live on OwlsTV.
