WASHINGTON, D.C. – A strong second half by the opponent proved to be the downfall for Bucknell field hockey for a second straight game as the Bison fell 4-0 to No. 22 American on Saturday. The Bison dropped to 3-5 overall and 0-1 following the Patriot League opener, while the Eagles improved to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

Bucknell was solid in the first half again, battling American to a scoreless tie at the break. The numbers were close with the Eagles holding a 4-2 edge in shots and a 3-1 lead in penalty corners.

Facing back-to-back nationally-ranked teams – Bucknell played No. 2 Penn State on Tuesday – the Bison have been out-scored by just one goal in the first half.

The scoreless tie lasted 14:47 into the second half before American’s Noor Coenen scored an unassisted goal.

It was all Haley Bowcutt from there. The Eagles’ senior recorded a hat-trick with three goals in the final 17 minutes.

Juniors M.C. Evans and Lexi Quick had shots on goal for Bucknell. Both were stopped by Maura Jacobs, who recorded her fourth shutout of the season for the Eagles.

Bucknell will play a third straight nationally-ranked opponent when it travels to take on No. 9 Maryland on Sunday at 1 p.m.
