MERION STATION, Pa. – Junior Mishi Papich and freshman Schuyler La Barge won their opening-round matches in singles as Bucknell continued play at the SJU Invitational at Saint Joseph’s on Saturday. It was the second of three days of competition.
Papich and La Barge were on opposite sides of the draw in Flight 2. Papich opened with a three-set win over Ryshena Providence. After falling behind with a 6-1 loss in the first set, the Bison junior came back with 7-5, 10-8 wins to advance to the quarterfinal round. She lost her next match to Villanova’s Alexandra Krogius.
La Barge also won in three sets in her first match of the day against Laura Gomez (Saint Joseph’s), who was an All-CAA player when she began her career at UNCW. The match was close throughout with La Barge winning the first set 7-5 and the third set 10-8. Gomez took the second set 6-4. The Bison freshman lost her next match to Drexel’s Clary Rodriguez.
Freshman Rachel Carroll added a win in an individual match in the consolation draw of Flight 4. The victory came by a 7-5, 6-0 score over Madeline Hill (Saint Joseph’s).
The Bison conclude play at the event on Sunday.
