WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tyler Smith won the 100th bout of his collegiate career during the Bucknell wrestling team's dual at American on Sunday at Bender Arena.
Smith, Intermat's No. 15 wrestler at 141 pounds, edged Jack Mutchnik by a 4-0 decision to become the 10th Bison to reach the 100-victory plateau. With 30 seconds left in the second period, he scored a takedown to build a 3-0 edge; he rode out Mutchnik the rest of the way to secure the extra point.
Smith is now 100-34 in his collegiate career, giving him a winning percentage of .746 that stands 10th in school history. A perfect 14-0 in dual action this season, he has won 24-straight dual bouts dating back to Jan. 14, 2017.
Despite Smith's milestone victory, and major decisions earned by D.J. Hollingshead (165) and Drew Phipps (184), the Eagles dropped the Bison, 32-11. American (6-5, 3-2 EIWA) used first-period pins at 157 and 197 and technical falls at 125 and 149 to snap a four-dual losing skid to Bucknell.
Hollingshead rallied from an early 6-2 deficit to top Anthony Wokasch by a 14-6 major decision. After Wokasch raced out to a 6-1 lead in the first two minutes of the opening period, Hollingshead responded by posting a takedown and six back points to build a 10-6 advantage. During the middle stanza, Hollingshead extended his lead to 13-6 with an escape and a takedown; he ultimately rode out Wokasch in the third period to secure the point he needed for the major decision.
Like Hollingshead, Phipps picked up his fifth major decision of the season by downing Conner Allshouse, 10-2. Phipps accumulated most of his points in the second period, recording an escape, a takedown and two back points. His extra point for riding time ultimately earned him the major decision.
Nick Stephani (174) and Brandon Stokes (285) were narrowly defeated in their bouts. Stephani was tied with Michael Eckhart, 2-2, entering the third period before Eckhart used a late takedown to pull away. Stokes was downed by Brett Dempsey by a slim 3-0 margin.
Bucknell (3-12, 2-6 EIWA) next returns to Davis Gym on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. to host Army West Point in its final EIWA dual of the season.
