ATHENS, Ga. – The Bucknell softball team put a scare into No. 10 Georgia before coming up just short in a 4-2 loss in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday at Jack Turner Stadium. The Bulldogs swept the two games, including an 8-0 win in six innings in the first contest.
The Bison dropped to 7-12 after two losses to a team that will undoubtedly be their toughest opponent of the regular season. Georgia improved to 24-1 and ran its winning streak to 23 games.
The Bison next travel to play two games against Austin Peay, two against Rutgers and one against Mercer at the Mercer Bears Classic beginning on Friday.
Game 1 – Georgia 8, Bucknell 0 (6 innings)
Six of Georgia’s eight hits went for extra bases as the Bulldogs rolled to an 8-0, six-inning win in the first game of the doubleheader. The Bulldogs led 3-0 through three innings before pulling away with five runs in the final three frames.
Mahlena O’Neal hit a three-run home run in the first inning, and Alyssa DiCarlo hit a two-run shot in the fifth to lead the offensive charge for Georgia.
Game 2 – Georgia 4, Bucknell 2
Bucknell scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to pull within one run, but Georgia held on for a 4-2 victory in the second game.
Trailing 3-0, Bucknell got on the board with an RBI triple by Hadley with no outs in the sixth inning. Freshman Jazmyn Stokes followed with a clutch RBI single to bring the Bison within one, 3-2. They went on to get runners on first and second, but a pair of strikeouts ended the rally.
Hadley had two of Bucknell’s four hits, adding a single to her triple. Stokes and Mariano contributed one hit apiece.
Lauren Lichtenwalner turned in a solid effort while pitching six innings for the Bison. She allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two. This season, the Bulldogs have averaged 7.8 runs per game and outscored their opponents, 194-23.
Cortni Emanuel led Georgia at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a two-run homer in the first inning. Alysen Febrey added an extra-base hit with a double.
