LEWISBURG, Pa. – A four-run seventh inning for Villanova made the difference as Bucknell baseball dropped a midweek game to the Wildcats, 6-4 on Wednesday at Depew Field. The Bison, who dropped to 5-18, led 4-1 before the rally.
Villanova, which upped its record to 5-14, scored its six runs on nine hits and took advantage of eight walks and two errors.
Bucknell jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after scoring once in each of the first two innings. JohnPaul Bell singled in Tyler Wincig in the first inning, while Mike Korchak doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Smith in the second.
The Bison added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by a pair of triples to right-center field. With one out, Bell ripped one to the gap for three bases. He would later score on a two-out, two-run triple by Luke Hartman.
Things unraveled for Bucknell in the top of the seventh, starting with an error that allowed the leadoff batter to reach first. The Wildcats scour four runs, three earned, on three hits, an error, a hit-by-pitch, and a walk.
Following an insurance run by the Wildcats in the top of the ninth, the Bison were able to get the game-tying run to the plate with one out in their final at-bats. But Jason Applegate, who worked the final 1.1 innings on the mound, got a flyout and a groundout to second to record his second save of the season.
Villanova’s final two relievers, Conor McCarthy and Applegate, combined for three scoreless innings. They didn’t allow a hit, walked a batter, and struck out three.
Led by Bell’s 2-for-3 day, Bucknell tallied six hits in the game. Wincig and Alex Baumann had one single apiece.
Bucknell’s top pitcher of the day was Hunter Robichaux, who gave up one hit and walked two while pitching 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.
The Bison now turn their attention to a three-game league series at Army this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at noon, and one game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
