PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Three Bucknell track and field athletes competed extremely well against some stiff competition on Thursday at Franklin Field during the first day of the Penn Relays.

Javelin thrower Maura Fiamoncini continues to have quite a first year for the Bison. The Mt. Carmel, Pennsylvania, native, who has broken both the Bucknell and Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium records this year, placed second in a field of 12 championship-division competitors with a toss of 176 feet, 11 inches. That was looking good to be the winning mark, but Kylee Carter of Auburn threw 179-8 on her sixth and and final attempt to nudge out Fiamoncini for the title by less than three feet. Laura Parades of Florida State finished third (172-1), and athletes from UMBC, Oklahoma, Auburn and Penn State rounded out the top seven.

Lauren Hudson put up another solid showing in the high jump. The senior placed eighth out of 35 competitors, clearing 5-5 ¾, a fraction less than the 5-6 she put up at last weekend’s Bucknell Team Challenge. She currently has the best mark in the Patriot League.

Molly Montalvo rounded out the first day of competition for Bucknell by finishing in 11th place in the hammer throw with a toss of 171-3. It was her second-best throw of the season, behind only the 175-6 mark that Montalvo recorded at the Jim Taylor Invitational back on March 31.

"Overall it was a great day for our three women," head coach Kevin Donner said. "Lauren is jumping very consistenly and finished eighth. Consistency in the high jump means she is due for a big performance. Molly was 11th in the college hammer and not too far from making the final. Maura finished second in the championship javelin which might be one of the highest finishes ever for a Bucknell athlete at the Penn Relays. She had four throws in her series that traveled over 51 meters, which is what we are working on this year."

The Penn Relays contingent will finish up on Friday, while another group will conclude the regular season at the Maroon and Gold Invitational on Saturday. Bucknell will then compete at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships on May 4-5 at Lafayette.
