LEWISBURG, Pa. – Head coach Dan Wirnsberger announced the Bucknell wrestling team's 12-man incoming freshman class on Tuesday.

"I'm very happy with this group of young men," Wirnsberger said. "Each fits very well within our student-athlete model. This class has extraordinary potential and high expectations, both academically and athletically. There's no doubt that, with this class, the future is bright for Bucknell wrestling."

The class of 2022 includes two state champions, 10 state placewinners and 11 team captains. The incoming freshmen hail from six different states: Pennsylvania (6), New York (2), Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts and New Jersey. Five of the Pennsylvania natives appeared in PA Power Wrestling’s listing of top 75 recruits.

The Bison enjoyed one of their most successful stretches in program history from 2014 to 2017, compiling a combined record of 39-14 (23-5 EIWA) and placing third at the 2015 and 2016 EIWA Championships. During the 2017-18 campaign, they battled injuries and used 22 different starters in dual competition, ultimately finishing with a 3-14 (2-7 EIWA) ledger. The performance of 141-pounder Tyler Smith, one of six seniors lost to graduation, was a bright spot; he became Bucknell's fifth four-time NCAA qualifier and seventh EIWA runner-up. He also put together the 11th undefeated dual season in program history and became the 10th Bison to reach the 100-win plateau. In 2018-19, Bucknell will return three EIWA placewinners in David Campbell, Joey Gould and Drew Phipps.
