OTTAWA – Bucknell great Matt Gilray was selected to represent Canada at the 2018 FIL Men’s Lacrosse World Championship, which will be held July 12-21 in Netanya, Israel.

Gilray is among 23 players who will help Canada defend its 2014 title. He is one of two 2018 graduates selected by the Canadian Lacrosse Association and the senior men’s national team coaching staff to wear the maple leaf on one of lacrosse’s biggest stages.

A three-time All-Patriot League Second Team selection, the versatile Gilray played close defense, long-stick midfield and short-stick defensive midfield over the course of his career. In 2018, he helped anchor a Bison defense that held 10 of its 15 opponents under 10 goals, causing 13 turnovers and scooping up 28 ground balls.

Gilray totaled 149 ground balls, 47 caused turnovers and 10 points (5g-5a) in 53 career games. He graduated ranked eighth in Bucknell’s history in ground balls and twice served as team captain.

The United States and Canada are the only two countries to ever win the FIL Men’s World Championship, with the Canadians claiming gold in 1978, 2006 and 2014. Forty six countries are set to compete at the 2018 edition.

The Canadian coaching staff evaluated 46 players during a selection camp in October 2017. The player pool was trimmed by a dozen in February 2018, leaving 34 players on the training roster and in contention for the team. The following is Canada’s 23-man roster:
