LEWISBURG, Pa. After opening its 2013 Patriot League campaign on the road last weekend, Bucknell volleyball returned to Davis Gym on Friday evening, falling to Navy in three sets, 25-17, 25-17, 25-20. The Bison, who have had several strong early season performances, are now 6-6 overall and 0-3 in the Patriot League. Navy leaves Lewisburg with a 6-7 overall mark and a 2-0 record in league action.

Kristen Titley led Bucknell with eight kills, while Karen Campbell’s .214 hitting percentage was a team-high. Meghan Wentzel contributed 10 assists and three service aces, while Katie Price anchored the defense with nine digs.

Bucknell snatched the first point of the match, exchanging leads with Navy in the early parts of the first set. The Midshipmen grabbed five consecutive points in the middle of the set to take a 10-5 lead, and then continued to build on that momentum to take a 25-17 win in spite of strong pushes from the Bison.

Navy’s hitting came alive in the second set, but Bucknell started as if it would even the match at a set apiece. The Bison had their biggest lead at 7-4, and fought off several pushes from the Mids, but Navy’s strong offense ultimately overpowered the young squad from Bucknell giving the visitors a second 25-17 victory.

With the match on the line, the Bison continued to battle through the third set, keeping the Midshipmen within their sight. They came to within two points of a Navy team that hit .429 in the final bout, but were unable to fight their way into the lead. A kill from Titley narrowed the score to 17-15 and aces from Wentzel and Campbell kept Navy on its toes, but the Midshipmen were able to escape with a 25-20 win to give them the match.

Olivia Yeager and Erin Fortner each tallied 10 kills for Navy, while Alex Karika contributed 36 assists.Fortner and Alli Graf each added eight digs.

Bucknell will welcome American to Lewisburg Saturday evening, as the Bison play another Patriot League match in front of a Family Weekend crowd. Action will begin at 5 p.m. in Davis Gym.
