LEWISBURG, Pa. – Down 2-1 at the end of the first, the Bucknell field hockey team used a five-goal second half to power past Colgate on Saturday afternoon, winning by a final score of 6-2. Senior Rachel Misko tallied a hat trick for the Bison, helping them to their sixth consecutive win over the Raiders, while junior Maggie Murphy added a goal and two assists to the brilliant second half performance. After playing the last of four consecutive games on Graham Field, Bucknell is now 5-4 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League for the year. Colgate falls to 1-8 overall and 0-2 in the conference with the loss.

“We really stuck with it in the second half,” said head coach Jeremy Cook. “We play in a way that allows us to really wear our opponents down. We were having tons of opportunities in the game, and the team was just able to persevere and follow our game plan. They had faith that it would work out in the end.”

The Bison worked their way onto the scoreboard early, as Kiersten Sydnor knocked a goal into the net just over a minute into the game. The sophomore, scoring for the fifth time this season, connected off of her own rebound after junior Kelsey Mucelli backhanded the ball into the circle.

After a few minutes of back and forth action inspired by tight defense on both sides, Colgate found a way to tie things up, as Halle Biggar tipped a shot by Olivia Nabhan into the top corner of the net to make it 1-1.

The Bison created several opportunities in the first half, outshooting the Raiders 12-16, and senior goalkeeper Erica Perrine made a big save on a breakaway by Nabhan with just over ten minutes to play. However, it was Colgate that would find the back of the net with 2:29 left on the clock, as Whitney Jones sent a shot along the goal line that Meredith Gibson knocked into the right corner, allowing the Raiders take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

The second half of the game was all Bucknell however, and the Bison quickly evened the score when Misko scored her first goal of the game. The forward received a pass from Murphy at the top of the circle that she managed to dribble into scoring range, backhanding it in for her third goal of the season.

Less than four minutes later, the Bison found themselves in position to take the lead when Colgate’s defensive play during a Bucknell corner gave Misko the chance to take a penalty stroke. The senior connected on the play, giving the Bison a 3-2 lead that they never relinquished.

Senior Leigh Hillman’s seventh goal of the season gave Bucknell a bit of a cushion with just under 20 minutes left in the game, as the forward directed in a long shot from the top of the circle. Mucelli was credited with the assist on the goal.

At 27:44, Misko completed her hat trick and scored her fifth goal of the season, connecting on an impressive passing play from Murphy. Collecting the ball in the top center of the circle, Misko dribbled in around the goalie and shot low on the right-hand side of the cage to put the Bison up, 5-2.

After assisting on three of the teams goals, Murphy found the back of the net on her own with 29 seconds left to play, scoring her first goal of the season when she connected on a cross from junior Amie Pritchard. The tally capped off an impressive second half and a solid 6-2 win for Bucknell.

Both goalies played strong games, with Perrine making five saves for the win and Colgate’s Amanda DiDomizio stopping 13 shots in the loss.

The Bison outshot the Raiders, 28-9, over the course of the game, and also held a 11-3 advantage in corners.

Bucknell field hockey returns to action next weekend, as the Bison head to Lafayette on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a 2 p.m. game before traveling to Temple for a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday, Oct. 6.
