LEWISBURG, Pa. – Patriot League scoring leader Morgan Dankanich struck twice just 1:45 apart in the first half to send Navy to a 2-0 win over Bucknell on Friday night at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison generated numerous scoring chances but fell to 2-3 in Patriot League play. Navy won its 10th consecutive game and improved to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in the Patriot League.

Bucknell was strong right from the opening whistle and nearly had the opening goal in the fourth minute of the match. Chelsey Garkowski earned a corner kick for the Bison, and Montana Paley’s high arcing service connected with Hannah Bonotto at the edge of the 6-yard box. Navy goalkeeper Elizabeth Hoerner knocked aside Bonotto’s header, however, and the Mids were able to clear.

The Bison got two dangerous crosses into the box shortly after that chance, but neither could be put in.

Bucknell keeper Jessie Ashworth came up with some theatrics of her own in the 13th minute, when she had to reach high to tip away a header from Paloma Perez. Ashworth then scrambled to slap the loose ball off the goal line, and Lauren Dandie cleared it away.

The game changed in the 18th minute when Navy got on the board. Dankanich sent a pass to right back Julie Schumacher charging down the right side. Dankanich then sprinted toward the goal and scored on a running header from Schumacher’s cross. Less than two minutes later Dankanich had her second of the night and 11th of the season when she curled in a free kick from about 30 yards out.

The two goals would be more than enough for the Mids, who came into the game with a 605-minute scoreless streak. They would go on to post their seventh consecutive shutout, but not without being tested by the Bucknell attack.

Six minutes after the Dankanich free kick, a nice passing combo from Danielle Piccirilli to Liz Dwornik to Sarah Bresette resulted in an open look from the middle of the box, but Bresette’s attempt just skipped wide to the left. With 10 minutes left in the half Corey Tipton made a nice run into the area but a Navy defender came in at the last second to break up the play.

Bucknell saw more of the ball in the first 20 minutes of the second half, and Bresette and Dwornik both generated excellent scoring opportunities. Hoerner got caught off her line and had to scramble back to stop Bresette’s attempt from the right side. Later, Dwornik made a great play to block off a defender and create a semi-breakaway for herself, but her shot had a bit too much loft and sailed over the bar.

Navy outshot Bucknell 16-11 for the game, but the Bison had a 7-6 edge in the second half. Ashworth finished with five saves, while Hoerner had six for Navy.

“We created some good opportunities and forced their keeper to make some saves, but she is very good,” said head coach Ben Landis. “We came out great to start the game, but then I thought we lost our belief for a few minutes, and Navy will make you pay for that. We have eight days until Colgate, so we’ll start fresh and be ready to face another very good team next Saturday.”

Bucknell will host Colgate on Saturday, Oct. 19 at noon at Emmitt Field.
