HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Bucknell volleyball team completed its season series with Colgate on Tuesday evening, falling to the defending Patriot League champions in three sets (25-9, 25-22, 25-10) on Cotterell Court. The Bison drop to 8-11 overall and 1-8 in Patriot League action with the loss, while the win lifts Colgate to 16-6 overall and 8-1 in conference play.
“It was a tough loss to a difficult opponent,” said head coach Anna Allison. “On some nights the connection is just not there, and unfortunately that is what happened tonight. There is no time to dwell on it however. We learned a lesson and now it’s time to prepare for the weekend.”
Senior Kristen Titley and freshman Jordan Walker each tallied seven kills to lead the Bucknell offense, and Titley’s .385 hitting percentage was also a team-high. Sophomore Meghan Wentzel added 10 assists and Rose Lewis contributed seven digs. Freshman Erika Eastley and sophomore Karen Campbell each made a solo block in the match.
Colgate jumped out to a 12-1 lead in the first set of the match, largely due to a 10 serve run by Kathleen Harris. Bucknell got two points back on a kill by Walker and an attack error by its opponents, but the Raiders took eight of the next nine points to take a 20-5 lead. Titley broke through with another kill and the Bison grabbed three consecutive points down the stretch, but the Raiders took the set by a score of 25-9.
The second set was an entirely different story, as Bucknell challenged Colgate for every point. The teams exchanged leads early on, tying things up on four separate occasions, but the Bison took six of the next nine points, building a 10-7 advantage over the Raiders. Colgate made a strong push in response, earning 11 of the next 14 points to build a five point lead of its own. Bucknell rallied with a five-point streak to come within one at the end of the set, but three late kills gave the Raiders a 25-22 victory.
Bucknell struggled to find a rhythm in the third set, as Colgate forged ahead to an 11-3 lead. The Bison rallied back in the middle of the set however, refusing to go down without a fight. Two consecutive kills by Campbell sparked the squad, and helped Bucknell narrow Colgate’s lead to five points at 15-10. The Raiders ended the match in the exact way that they started it however, scoring 10 points on the back of Harris’ serve to take a 25-10 set win and a 3-0 match victory.
Diane Seely had 10 kills for the Raiders and hit .714 in the contest. Kaylee Fifer added 28 assists, while Caitlin Cremin contributed 11 digs. As a team, Colgate hit .423.
Bucknell returns to Davis Gym for two more Patriot League matchups this weekend, as the Bison welcome the Army Black Knights on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. and the Holy Cross Crusaders on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 5 p.m.
