Wrestling Splits with Shippensburg and Lock Haven on Opening Night

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Bucknell wrestling team opened the 2013-14 season Saturday evening at Lock Haven’s Thomas Fieldhouse and posted a 1-1 record against Shippensburg and host Lock Haven. The Bison started the day with a 50-0 victory over the Red Raiders and then dropped a 19-13 decision to the Bald Eagles in match that was tied 13-13 with two bouts to go.

The opening match against Shippensburg featured three forfeits, three pins, two major decisions and two decisions for Bucknell, which posted its largest win since defeating Sacred Heart 51-0 in December 2011. Alex Pellicciotti (149), Rustin Barrick (165) and Joe Stolfi (285) recorded the pins.

The second match of the night was closer as the Bison came back from a 9-0 deficit to even the score at 13-13 with only the 133 and 141-pound bouts to go since the match started at 149. However, Lock Haven’s Cody Wheeler posted an 11-4 decision over freshman Grim Gonzalez and nationally ranked Dan Neff defeated rookie Victor Lopez to clinch the match for the Bald Eagles.

Veterans Stephen McPeek, Tyler Lyster, Stolfi and Paul Petrov posted wins for Bucknell. Stolfi’s victory was by a 15-5 major decision, while the other three won by decisions. Petrov’s 6-2 win at 125 tied the score with only two bouts remaining.

Bucknell’s lineup against Shippensburg (0-2) featured three freshmen and two sophomores, while its lineup against Lock Haven (2-0) consisted of four freshmen and two sophomores.

The Bison will be back in action next Saturday, Nov. 9, at No. 22 Lehigh. Start time for the EIWA match is 7 p.m.
