ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Stefan Aleksic scored seven of Bucknell’s 20 goals Saturday to help lead the Bison men’s water polo team into the Southern Championships title game for the second consecutive year, and third time in the last four years. Second-seeded Bucknell defeated Washington & Jefferson 12-5 in the quarterfinals and then downed third-seeded Mercyhurst 8-6 in the semis. The Bison will take on host and fifth-seeded Navy in the championship tilt Sunday at 3:40 p.m.
Aleksic tallied three goals in the opener against the Presidents that saw Bucknell (13-8) jump out to a 7-3 halftime lead. The advantage grew to 12-4 at the end of three quarters. Alex Nowlin and Julian Colina added two goals apiece for the Bison.
The nightcap was much closer as Bucknell did not score its first goal until nearly 10 minutes had been played. The Bison trailed 5-2 at halftime, but outscored the Lakers 6-1 in the second half, holding them scoreless for more than 15 minutes during one stretch. Aleksic registered four more goals, including three in the first 8:25 of the second half.
Bucknell won its first-ever Southern Championships crown last November and will be going for a second consecutive title Sunday. The Bison were 2-0 against Navy during the regular season, winning a two-goal contest in Annapolis and a one-goal decision at Kinney Natatorium.
