Levendoski & McDonnell Break School Records as Bison win Bucknell Invitational
Release:   11/24/2013

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Emma Levendoski broke her own school record in the 200 backstroke and freshman Amber McDonnell broke an eight-year-old program standard in the 200 fly to highlight the final day of the three-day Bucknell Invitational for the host Bison. Bucknell finished on top of the 10-team standings with 1,870 points, nearly 800 more than runner-up Fordham.

Levendoski, Kelly Pontecorvo in the 1,650 free and the 400 free relay of Levendoski, Lauren Perry, Kaitlyn Utkewicz and Rachel McGoff helped Bucknell to three victories in the six events contested Sunday. The Bison posted five new program top-10 marks with the school records by Levendoski and McDonnell leading the way.

Levendoski, who lowered the school record in the 100 back each of the previous two days, won the 200 back prelims in 1:58.63, about a second shy of her personal best from last year’s Patriot League Championships, but good enough to earn an NCAA “B” cut. She proceeded to trim nearly two seconds off that time in the finals, touching the wall in 1:56.80 and knocking .91 seconds off her own school record. Levendoski was nearly six seconds ahead of the next fastest swimmer in the field.

Bucknell dominated the 200 back behind Levendoski as Bison occupied eight of the top 14 spots and there were nine overall scorers. Five Bucknell swimmers were in the “A” final and helped produce 129 points towards the team score. Joining Levendoski in the top final were Alanna Nawrocki (4th), Stephanie Koziol (5th), Caroline Orem (6th) and Ashley Henderson (8th).

McDonnell posted her third program top-10 mark of the weekend when she broke Katherine Munson’s school record by 1.01 seconds in the prelims of the 200 fly. Her time of 2:03.53 placed her third in the prelim and she ended up as Bucknell’s top finisher in the final, touching the wall fifth. Kristen Purdy (7th) and Koziol (8th) were also in the championship final.

Pontecorvo won the 1,650 free by more than 13 seconds over La Salle’s Greta Reichert. Six Bison scored points in the event with Melissa Besman (7th) also finishing in the top 10.

Gina Gautieri led the way for the Bison in the 200 breast finishing third. She finished ninth in the prelims, but moved up into the “A” final and trimmed nearly three seconds off her prelims time to post the No. 7 mark in program history in the event. Meg Lattimer (5th) and Diana Hanson (7th) were not far behind Gautieri. Hanson briefly held the No. 10 spot on Bucknell’s all-time list in the 200 fly thanks to her 2:24.62 in the prelims, but she was bumped off later in the day by Gautieri.

Bucknell had seven scorers in the 100 free with McGoff’s third-place finish leading the way. Her time of 52.06 in the finals places her 10th in program annals. Utkewicz was also an “A” finalist, placing seventh, while Lauren Perry, Lyndsey Marcheskie and Emily Wright were “B” finalists.

Bucknell will be back in action Dec. 7 when it travels to Hamilton, N.Y., for a dual meet with Patriot League foe Colgate.
