Nicholson Breaks Own 200 Fly School Record as Bison Finish Second at Invitational
Release:   11/24/2013

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Mike Nicholson broke his own school record in the 200 fly and won both the 200 fly and 200 breast to cap a solid weekend by the Bucknell men’s swimming and diving team, which placed second of nine teams in its weekend-long invitational at Kinney Natatorium that wrapped up on Sunday. Yale took home the team title, finishing 160 points ahead of the Bison.

A multiple-time All-Patriot League performer, Nicholson won all four of his individual events this weekend as he was victorious in the 200 IM Friday and the 400 IM Saturday. After winning the prelims of both the 200 fly and 200 breast on Sunday, he followed up with victories in the finals. His time of 1:48.08 in the 200 fly finals lowered his own school record by .37 seconds and he was just .09 off an NCAA “B” cut. Ben Seketa was not far behind Nicholson in the 200 breast, finishing fourth.

Nicholson owns four school records: 200 breast, 200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM.

Nicholson was not the only Bison to etch his named in the school’s record book on Sunday as freshmen Louis Behnen and Jack Robinson recorded program top-10 times. Behnen finished second in the 1,650 free in a time of 15:39.41, putting him No. 2 in school history. His 1,000 free split of 9:31.04 was 1.37 better than his previous best and ranks third on that list. Behnen also posted the No. 6 time in the 200 back with a 1:50.58 in the prelims. Robinson is 10th on that list thanks to his 1:51.90 time en route to a third-place finish in the finals. Behnen, who recorded five program top-10 marks this weekend, was one spot behind in fourth place.

Brian Phillips (8th), George Beatty (10th), Jeff Shanley (13th), Collin Greene (17th), Sean Lyons (19th) and Cameron Hackett (24th) joined Behnen as scorers in the 1,650 free. Shanley and Greene also scored in the 200 fly.

The Bison had plenty of strong depth in the 100 free, claiming the second through fifth positions. Matt Hadley led the way in second place and he was followed in order by Trevor Reitz, Steve Grune and Chris Oritz. Those same four swimmers composed the 400 free relay that tied for third in the final event of the weekend.

The one-meter diving competition was also held Sunday and Jon Jones was Bucknell’s lone finalist, although Patrick Alvermann and Tyler Wenzel finished ninth and 10th, respectively, in the prelims. Jones improved from an eighth-place showing in the prelims to a seventh-place finish in the finals.

Bucknell will be back in action Dec. 7 when it travels to Hamilton, N.Y., for a dual meet with Patriot League foe Colgate.
