CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Bucknell sophomore 125-pounder Paul Petrov posted a 3-0 record Wednesday on the first day of the Southern Scuffle and advanced to the quarterfinals of the competitive wrestling event. Petrov, one of nine Bison in action, entered as the No. 12 seed in the bracket.
In addition to Petrov, juniors Tyler Lyster (197 pounds) and Joe Stolfi (285) advanced to the second day of the Southern Scuffle. Both are in the wrestlebacks and can still finish as high as third in their brackets.
Petrov’s performance highlighted the day for Bucknell as he posted three wins by decision. He opened with a 4-3 win over Nick Herrmann from Virginia. He followed with a 14-7 decision over Arizona State’s Ares Carpio. Petrov then earned his spot in the quarterfinals with a 5-3 win over sixth-seeded Anthony Zanetta from Pittsburgh. It marked Petrov’s second straight win over Zanetta after defeating him 8-7 in a Dec. 21 dual in Davis Gym.
Petrov has now won nine bouts in a row and is a team-best 14-4 on the season. He will face Air Force’s third-seeded Josh Martinez first on Thursday.
Stolfi had a chance to earn a spot in the quarterfinals as well, but he dropped an overtime bout to No. 11 seed Devin Mellon of Missouri with a quarterfinals berth on the line. The loss snapped an eight-bout winning streak for the sixth-seeded Stolfi.
Lyster also posted a 1-1 mark on Wednesday. He dropped his first bout in the championship bracket, but earned a 5-2 decision in the consolations to advance to Thursday.
