Wrestling Posts 1-2 Record at Virginia Duals
Release:   01/10/2014

HAMPTON, Va. – Paul Petrov won all three of his bouts Friday at the Virginia Duals, but the Bucknell (3-6) wrestling team was victorious in just one of its three matches as it completed competition at the bracketed team event Friday evening. The Bison opened the day with a 24-11 loss to No. 22 Bloomsburg and then dropped a tight 19-18 decision to The Citadel. Bucknell bounced back and ended the day on a high note with a 27-9 win over George Mason.

The 125-pound Petrov, who is now tied with Joe Stolfi for the team lead in wins with 17, had a standout day with three bonus-point victories. He posted a major decision against Bloomsburg’s Sean Boylan, he pinned The Citadel’s Joaquin Marquez and ended his day with a 20-5 tech fall over George Mason’s William Prochniewski. Petrov, who has won 12 of his last 14 bouts, collected 15 of Bucknell’s 56 points on Friday.

Stolfi and freshman 184-pounder Rory Bonner were the other Bison with multiple wins on the day. Stolfi, who is ranked 19th nationally at 285 pounds, posted falls against The Citadel and George Mason after opening the day with a loss by decision to nationally ranked Justin Grant. Stolfi now has 13 pins this season to rank tied for sixth on the program’s single-season ledger, while his 22 career pins rank 10th on the all-time list.

Bonner’s three bouts Friday were decided by a total of five points. He opened with a 5-3 overtime victory over Sam Shirey of Bloomsburg and followed that with a 7-5 decision against the Citadel that brought Bucknell to within 16-12. Bonner just missed matching Petrov’s 3-0 day with a 4-3 loss against George Mason.

Logan Kerin (vs. Bloomsburg), Connor Lapresi (vs. The Citadel), Grim Gonzalez (vs. George Mason), Victor Lopez (vs. George Mason), Ray Schlitt (vs. George Mason), Robert Schlitt (vs. George Mason) and Tyler Lyster (vs. George Mason) were the other Bison to register victories at the Virginia Duals.

Bucknell closed the day by winning seven of 10 bouts against the Patriots, a team the Bison will face on the road the first weekend of February. Petrov, Lyster and Stolfi posted bonus-point victories as Bucknell never trailed.

The match against The Citadel was the second one-point outcome of the year for the Bison, who defeated nationally ranked Lehigh 18-17 in November. Bucknell held an early 9-3 lead, but the Bulldogs won four straight bouts to go up 16-9. Victories by Bonner and Stolfi down the stretch made the final outcome just one point.

Bloomsburg had four nationally ranked wrestlers in its lineup and all four posted victories as Petrov, Kerin and Bonner posted wins against the Huskies. Bloomsburg marked the fifth ranked opponent for Bucknell this season.

Overall, the Bison had 14 individual victories on Friday and six were by freshmen and four were by sophomores.

Bucknell will next be in action next weekend, Jan. 18-19, when it hosts Brown (Sat.), Clarion (Sat.) and Penn (Sun.). All three matches will air live free of charge on Bison Vision on the Patriot League Network.
