Stolfi Pin Ties Score, but Wrestling Falls to Columbia on Bout Points Tiebreaker
Release:   01/24/2014

NEW YORK, N.Y. – A Joe Stolfi pin of Columbia heavyweight Conor Sweeney evened the score at 18-all in the final bout of Friday’s wrestling dual between Bucknell and Columbia, but the Lions earned the win in the match as they were awarded the winning point thanks to outscoring the Bison 41-39 in the eight bouts that did not end in fall. It was the second one-point loss of the year for Bucknell, which defeated nationally ranked Lehigh by one point in November.

It was a back-and-forth match throughout as both teams recorded four wins by decision and one pin. Bucknell (5-8, 2-2 EIWA) trailed 18-9 with two bouts remaining, a familiar position after posting two comeback wins last Saturday against Brown and Clarion. Tyler Lyster posted a 6-2 decision for the Bison at 197 to make the score 18-12. Stolfi followed with his 16th pin of the year in 2:58 to tie the score, but Columbia (6-3, 3-2 EIWA) earned the tiebreaker point for their fifth consecutive win.

Bucknell jumped out to an early 9-3 lead as Paul Petrov (125), Grim Gonzalez (133) and Victor Lopez (149) each won by decision. Columbia answered back with four straight wins, including three by decision, to take that 18-9 advantage.

The Lions had two ranked grapplers in their lineup and both posted victories. No. 17 Matt Bystol won by decision over Connor Lapresi at 141, while No. 14 Shane Hughes pinned Joey Krulock seconds before the end of regulation at 174. Stolfi, who has won six straight bouts and is now tied for third on the program’s single-season pins list, is ranked 20th nationally at 285 for Bucknell.

Petrov’s 13-9 decision at 125 marked his seventh straight victory as he picked up his career-high 21st win of the year. He and Stolfi pace the team with matching 21-6 marks on the season. Lyster has now won four of his last five bouts to up his career win total to 44.

Bucknell will be idle until next Friday when it hosts EIWA foe American in Davis Gym. Start time is 7 p.m. and the dual will be broadcast live and free of charge via Bison Vision on the Patriot League Network.
