Bucknell Begins Competition in Bison Open, Penn State National Invitational
Release:   02/01/2014

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa./LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell track and field teams completed the first day of competition at two different meets on Friday, with part of the squad participating in the Penn State National Invitational at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track and the remainder of the Bison competing in the Bison Open at Gerhard Fieldhouse The afternoon was highlighted by a new school record, multiple qualifying times for IC4As/ECACs in March and numerous personal best times.

“It was a very nice first day at the Penn State National Invitational and at the Bison Open,” said head coach Kevin Donner, “We had a total of five new IC4A/ECAC qualifiers between the two meets, and many of the performances our athletes turned in were personal bests. Lupica and Fellows each placed extremely well at Penn State, and that is a huge accomplishment for both of them.”

Junior Christian Lupica, who competed at the prestigious Penn State National Invitational, continued to affirm his standing as one of the program’s greats, breaking the school record in the 60m hurdles for the third time this season.  The defending Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week turned in a solid time of 8.01 in the heats before producing a blazing performance of 7.88 in the semifinals of the event. The mark was four one-hundredths faster than the new program standard that he set at last weekend’s Gulden Invitational. Lupica was impressive in the finals as well, crossing the finish line in 7.92 to finish fifth in the event.

Lupica was not the only one to impress at Penn State, as freshman Catherine Scott won the 5000 by more than three seconds, finishing with a time of 17:30.53. The mark surpassed the ECAC cut time and makes her the eighth-fastest performer in the event in program history. Junior Jack Fellows represented the Bison in the weight throw, finishing sixth and qualifying for IC4As with a heave of 59-05.00, while the distance medley relay team of sophomore John Westwood, junior Kevin Tapper, junior Alex Jagelsky and junior Andrew Garcia-Garrison combined for a time of 10:02.47, taking third place and also qualifying for IC4As.

Strong performances abounded in Lewisburg as well, as several more Bucknell athletes took top places in the Bison Open at Gerhard Fieldhouse. Sophomore Jenn Silvestri finished second in the hurdles with a time of 9.05, while sophomore Grant Reynolds claimed the same spot in the event on the men’s side. Reynolds’ time of 8.18 qualified him for the IC4A Championships. Senior Emily Ando achieved an ECAC qualifying mark in the pole vault, tying for second place with her distance of 11-09.75, while the distance medley relay team of freshman Ross Pirnie, freshman Jordan Jackson, sophomore Cole Conte and senior Eric Balaban raced to a time of 10:24.98, qualifying for IC4As and finishing fourth.

Competition in the Bison Open and the Penn State National Invitational will continue on Saturday, with events set to begin at 9:30 a.m. in Lewisburg and 10:30 a.m. in University Park. Live results are available for both meets, and the Penn State Invitational will be video streamed by FloTrack.
