FAIRFAX/CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Bucknell wrestling team hit the road for two matches in two different locations Sunday and ended the day with a split. The Bison opened the morning with a 26-10 win at George Mason in Fairfax, Va., jumped on the bus for about two hours to travel to Charlottesville, Va., and took on No. 13 Virginia. The Bison dropped that match by a 29-12 score and are now 7-9 on the year.
Bucknell’s win over George Mason was the second of the year for the Bison over the Patriots, following a 27-9 victory at last month’s Virginia Duals, while the Cavaliers were the sixth ranked opponent for Bucknell this season.
Paul Petrov, Victor Lopez and Joe Stolfi posted wins in both ends of the doubleheader for the Bison. Petrov has won nine of his last 10 bouts at 125 pounds, while Stolfi has won nine a row. Lopez has a five-bout winning streak and his victory against Virginia was opposite Gus Sako, who is ranked ninth nationally according to Intermat and brought a strong 15-1 record into the bout.
“Victor’s win against Virginia was probably the best win this year by one of our guys,” commented Bison head coach Dan Wirnsberger after the match that ended in a 7-6 decision in favor of Lopez.
Lopez, a freshman, is no stranger to defeating ranked opponents having upended top-20 opponents from Oklahoma State and Oklahoma in the same day earlier this year.
Bucknell won seven of the 10 bouts against George Mason (6-12) with Grim Gonzalez (133), Rustin Barrick (165), Rory Bonner (184) and Tyler Lyster (197) joining Petrov, Lopez and Stolfi in the winner’s circle. Petrov and Barrick recorded major decisions, while Lopez posted his third pin of the year. Bonner avenged an earlier dual loss to Ryan Hembury with a 12-7 decision.
In the afternoon, Petrov and Lopez registered wins by decision, while Stolfi concluded the match and day with his 17th pin of the year and the 26th of his three-year career. He is in third place on Bucknell’s single-season pins list and seventh on the career ledger, two falls behind sixth-place Ron Wellman. Virginia (15-3) had five ranked grapplers in its lineup.
The Bison will be idle until next Sunday, Feb. 9, when they do the two dual matches in two different locations in the same day once again. Bucknell will wrestle at Army (West Point, N.Y.) at 2 p.m. and then travel to Fairfield, Conn., for a 7 p.m. match at Sacred Heart.
