STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Courtney Murphy scored seven goals to lead nationally ranked Stony Brook to an 18-1 victory over Bucknell in the women’s lacrosse season opener for both teams on Saturday morning at La Valle Stadium. Sophie Kleinert scored for the Bison, who are opening the season with three straight ranked opponents for the second year in a row.
Dorrien Van Dyke scored five goals, Michelle Rubino added three, and Alyssa Cardillo had two goals and four assists for the Seawolves, the defending America East champions who are ranked 13th in the IWLCA Coaches' Poll and 14th in the Brine Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. All-America goalie Frankie Caridi made nine saves to lead a stout Stony Brook defense that also forced 19 turnovers and limited the Bison to 13 total shots.
Bucknell’s goal came with 11:03 remaining in the first half, when Katelyn Miller fed Kleinert to make it an 8-1 game. Stony Brook tacked on three more goals before halftime and then scored all seven of the second-half tallies.
Bucknell had a strong day at the draw circle, where it won 13 of the 21 draws. Kleinert led the way with four draw controls, while Miller and Kerri Althouse had three apiece. Miller also had a team-high three ground balls, while Kleinert and freshman defender Lucia Smircich added two each.
Smircich was one of four freshmen in the starting lineup for the Bison, joining midfielder Madison Molinari, attacker Bridget Shaffrey and goalie Elizabeth Duswalt. Molinari tied for the team lead with three shots and she led the squad with two caused turnovers. Duswalt played all 60 minutes in goal and finished with seven saves in her debut.
Bucknell will play its home opener on Wednesday against No. 7 Penn State at 4 p.m. at Graham Field.
