Nicholson Wins Third Career PL Title, Bison Men in Fourth at Championships
Release:   02/21/2014

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Senior Mike Nicholson won his second title in as many days on Friday at the Patriot League Championships as he won the 400 IM one day after taking home gold in the 200 IM. Bucknell sits fourth in the team standings, sandwiched between third-place Army and fifth-place Lehigh.

Nicholson won the 400 IM Friday by 1.62 seconds over freshman teammate Louis Behnen, who finished fifth in the 500 free on Thursday. It is the second career 400 IM crown for Nicholson, who won the event as a freshman in 2011. Already the school record-holder in the 400 IM, Nicholson has finished first or second in the 400 IM in each of his four years.

“It was a great race for Mike,” said Bucknell head coach Dan Schinnerer. “Mike’s focus through the years has been the 400 IM and it has been his bread and butter. It was nice to see him get out to a big lead and win after yesterday’s close 200 IM. It was also nice to see Louis get second by holding off the Navy guy.”

Nicholson became the first Bison to win two Patriot League titles in one year since Luke Trafton in 2008.

Nicholson was also part of the record-setting 400 medley relay squad that broke the five-year-old school record by .65 seconds. Nicholson, who swam the third leg, teamed with Jack Robinson, Ben Seketa and Erik Heinemann.

“We continue to meet the challenges,” mentioned Schinnerer. “We have some younger guys that have stepped up and performed well. Jack Robinson did a nice job leading off the 400 medley relay and putting us in position to set the school record after swimming five races earlier in the day.”

Robinson was the busiest Bison on Friday as he placed eighth in the 400 IM and 13th in the 100 back. He tied for eighth in the 100 back prelims, but lost an afternoon swim-off. Robinson recorded the No. 3 time (3:55.85) in program history in the 400 IM and the No. 4 time (50.30) in the 100 back.

Jeff Shanley rounded out the list of Bison that scored in the 400 IM, joining Nicholson, Behnen and Robinson. His prelims time (4:02.84) is No. 8 on the Bucknell all-time ledger. The 400 IM featured the most Bison scorers of any event on Friday.

Bucknell had two scorers in the 100 fly, 100 breast and 200 free with Steve Grune (6th in 100 fly), Seketa (6th in 100 breast) and Heinemann (8th in 200 free) leading the way in those events. Trevor Reitz (12th in 100 fly), Tim Perley (15th in 100 breast) and Matt Hadley (10th in 200 free) were the other Bison scorers on the night.

Grune recorded the No. 3 time in program history in the 100 fly, while Heinemann’s time of 1:39.04 is fourth in the record books.

The Patriot League Championships will conclude Saturday. Prelims are slated for 10:30 a.m. and the finals will commence at 6 p.m.
