CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Hannah Sunday scored a team-high four goals to lead the Bucknell women’s water polo team to an 8-6 victory over Villanova Saturday afternoon at Harvard to open the CWPA/MAAC Crossover weekend. In the nightcap, a 9-6 win over Iona, it was a four-goal outing from Julianne Valdes that helped propel the Bison to the victory as Bucknell improved to 4-2 on the young season.
The Bison opened last weekend’s Bison Invitational with a 10-7 comeback victory over Villanova. This time they jumped out to a 2-0 first-quarter lead and were still up 7-4 entering the fourth period. Sunday paced the offense with her season-high four goals, while Stephanie Ovalle, Mackenzie Ferry, Tegan Stanbach and Taylor Barnett added one apiece.
Valdes (four goals) and Ovalle (two goals) led the way in the second game. Marrs posted a career-high four assists in the victory to boost her season total to 12, just one less than she had in all of 2013.
Bucknell drew 10 ejections Saturday with Sunday registering eight of them, including six against Iona.
Rena Heim totaled 21 saves in the two games to move past 700 in her career. She ranks fourth on the Bison all-time list, just four behind third-place Alison Carter.
The win over Villanova marked the 250th victory in program history.
Bucknell will wrap up the weekend with games against Wagner (8 a.m.) and Siena (2:15 p.m.) on Sunday.
