Women's Water Polo Splits on Final Day of CWPA/MAAC Crossover
Release:   02/23/2014

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Hannah Sunday scored a career high-tying five goals and Bucknell used a 4-0 first quarter to defeat Siena 9-5 to close out the CWPA/MAAC Crossover Sunday afternoon. The win helped the Bison split on the final day of the two-day event as they dropped a 13-5 decision to Wagner earlier in the day. Barbara Peterson netted a career-high four goals in that contest that saw Bucknell outscored 8-3 in the second half.

The Bison finished the weekend with a 3-1 record as they went 2-0 on Saturday with victories over Villanova and Iona.

Bucknell (5-3) used the early lead against the Saints as a chance to get a number of reserves playing time. Backup goalie Haley Derrod played the final 24 minutes and recorded a career-high nine saves, while freshmen Tegan Stanbach and Julia Ingersoll dished out two assists apiece. Sophomore Katherine DeRuff chipped in one goal and one assist off the bench as the Bison assisted on all nine of their goals and had a six-goal advantage after three quarters of play.

Sunday’s five goals were the most by a Bucknell player this season as she tied Julianne Valdes for the season team lead with 11. She crossed the 50-point plateau for her career and now has 51.

The Bison trailed Wagner just 5-2 at halftime in the 8 a.m. contest, but were outscored 5-1 in the fourth quarter. Peterson (4) and Valdes (1) registered all the goals for Bucknell, which saw its three-game winning streak snapped.

Senior goalie Rena Heim totaled 11 saves in the two games, pushing her career total to 725 and past Alison Carter and into third place in program history. Next up is second-place Lindsay Chesterfield and her 892 stops from 2000 to 2003.

After playing four games each of the last two weekends, the Bison will now be idle until their spring break trip to California begins with a March 11 game at Cal Baptist.
