HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Kevin Adams scored the tiebreaking goal with 4:26 remaining to lift Colgate to a 9-8 win over Bucknell in a Patriot League men's lacrosse matchup Saturday afternoon at frigid Andy Kerr Stadium. Todd Heritage scored three times, including the 100th goal of his career, and Sean Doyle tallied two goals and two assists for the Bison, who fell to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League.
Ryan Walsh recorded two goals and two assists for the Raiders (3-1, 1-1), who bounced back after falling to Lafayette last week.
Heritage hit the century mark with a man-up goal off a feed from David Dickson just under five minutes into the contest. Colgate struck back with three straight goals, and the Bison seemed to be fighting from behind the rest of the way.
Twice Bucknell bounced back from two-goal deficits, but the Raiders had answers both times. Goals from Heritage and Kyle Shanahan early in the second quarter knotted the game at 3-3. Colgate back up on a score by Walsh, but Bucknell's Alex Ryan found the net to make it a 4-4 game at the half.
The Bison took a brief 5-4 lead on Doyle's unassisted tally to start the third period, but the Raiders pieced together their second 3-0 run of the day to surge back in front.
Bucknell trailed 8-6 inside 12 minutes to play, but Heritage scored with 11:40 left and Doyle made it 8-8 with the team's third EMO goal of the day with 6:50 to go.
The Bison won the ensuing faceoff, but Brandon Burke came up with two big saves for the Raiders. After a Bison turnover, Adams scored off a feed from Eric Foote to put Colgate back in front 9-8.
The Bison had a good opportunity to tie it when Colgate took a late tripping penalty, but Burke made another save and Heritage hit the goalpost with 2:16 remaining. Colgate regained possession after a Bucknell turnover with a minute to play. Jackson Place stole the ball back for Bucknell with 11 seconds left, but the Bison did not have time to get a shot off before the clock expired.
Bucknell finished with a 32-27 shot advantage even though Colgate won 12 of the 19 faceoffs. The Bison were 3-for-6 with an extra man and went 14-for-15 on clears, making them 73-for-75 on the season.
Sam Grinberg made 10 saves for Bucknell, while Burke came up with eight of his nine stops in the second half for the Raiders.
Heritage became the fifth Bison to record 100 career goals, joining Justin Zackey (138), Tom Cusick (117), Chris Cara (111) and Joe Mele (103). Heritage now has 102.
The Bison will next host Lehigh in another key Patriot League battle next Saturday at noon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The game will be streamed live on Bison Vision on the Patriot League network.
