Nicholson Breaks 26-Year-Old School Record, Bison Sixth at ECACs
Release:   03/01/2014

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Bucknell senior and four-time All-Patriot League choice Mike Nicholson entered Saturday’s day two of the ECAC Championships with four school records to his name. He concluded the day with a fifth as he beat Hall of Famer Jim Harvey’s 26-year-old mark in the 100 fly to highlight a strong day for the Bison men’s swimming and diving team.

Bucknell, which stands sixth in the team standings after the second of three days in the meet, had a top-five finisher in three of the five individual events contested Saturday and had six new entries on the program’s top-10 lists, including Nicholson.

Harvey’s record (49.22) in the 100 fly had stood since 1988 and only eight Bison had ever gotten to within a second of it, including Nicholson, whose best time entering the day was 49.76 earlier this year against Army. The runner-up in the 200 IM on Friday, Nicholson beat Harvey’s record by .01 in Saturday’s prelims. He shaved even more time off in the finals, lowering the mark to 48.76. A two-time ECAC champion, Nicholson placed third in the race. He now owns school records in the 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 breast, 100 fly and 200 fly.

Not far behind Nicholson in the 100 fly was teammate Erik Heinemann, who placed sixth with the No. 6 time (49.63) in program history. Steve Grune (11th) also scored in the event for the Bison.

Three Bison also scored in the 200 free, led by freshman Jack Robinson. The rookie placed fourth in 1:40.30, the seventh-best time in school history. Fellow freshman Louis Behnen was seventh with the No. 10 time in the record books, while yet another freshman Cameron Hackett was 16th in the finals.

Ben Seketa (3rd) was Bucknell’s only scorer in the 100 breast, while Jeff Shanley’s 14th-place showing in the 400 IM marked the Bison’s only points in that event.

Bucknell’s relays were strong on Saturday as the 200 medley relay of Nicholson, Seketa, Grune and Heinemann placed fourth in the No. 9 time in program history. The 800 free of Heinemann, Behnen, Hackett and Robinson also posted the No. 9 time in the record books on the way to a third-place showing in the final event of the night.

The ECAC Championships will conclude Sunday. Prelims are slated for 9 a.m. and the finals will begin at 4 p.m.
